In light of the CDC’s recent recommendation to wear cloth face masks in public settings, we've been working hard to provide more face mask patterns for our community. We previously launched a popular mask pattern that’s been widely adopted. Now, we’re thrilled to present a new, easy-to-make face mask pattern that requires no sewing and can be crafted from materials you likely already have at home, such as old t-shirts. Whether you have a Cricut machine or not, we’ll guide you through the process.
Preparation for Your No-Sew Face Mask
Materials Needed
- Old t-shirt (preferably cotton for comfort and breathability)
- Scissors or fabric cutter
- Self-healing mat or a flat surface for cutting
- Template for the face mask (printable or digital)
Setting Up
Prepare Your Workspace: Lay out your t-shirt on a self-healing mat or any other flat surface. Smooth out any wrinkles to ensure an even cut.
Design Considerations: Use the Mat Preview screen in Design Space® to adjust the template if you’re using a Cricut machine. Ensure that your template fits within the dimensions of a 12” x 12” (30.5 cm x 30.5 cm) mat.
Cutting Your Face Mask
Using a Cricut Machine
Load the Material: Follow the prompts in Design Space® to cut the face mask pattern from your t-shirt material. Make sure you are using the correct settings for fabric.
Verify Cuts: After cutting, check that all pieces are correctly cut out according to your template.
Without a Cricut Machine
- Trace and Cut: Place the template on the t-shirt and trace around it with a fabric marker or pencil. Cut out the shapes using scissors. Ensure that you also cut out the slits as indicated in the template.
Assembling Your Face Mask
Step-by-Step Assembly
Layout and Trace: On your flat surface, lay the t-shirt and smooth it out. Position the template on the t-shirt and trace around it if cutting manually. If you’re using a Cricut machine, you can cut directly through the layers of fabric.
Cut the Pieces: Ensure you cut out the mask shapes and slits according to the template.
Tip: By carefully planning your cuts, you can often get multiple masks from one t-shirt.
Layer and Fold: Align the two cut pieces of the mask. If desired, place a scrap piece of fabric between the two layers for added comfort. Fold the top edge of both layers down about 0.5” (1.3 cm).
Fit the Mask: Bring the mask up to your face, ensuring that the inner layer is against your skin. Hold the mask by the top loops on either side.
Secure the Mask: Loop the top slits over your ears. Then, bring the bottom slits up and loop them over your ears again. Adjust the mask as needed for a comfortable fit.
Tip: Use leftover strips from the t-shirt to create ties if you prefer not to use the slits, or wait for our upcoming ear saver projects to relieve ear strain.
Final Tips and Recommendations
Material Choice: Cotton t-shirts are recommended for their breathability and comfort. However, any soft, stretchy fabric will work.
Fit and Comfort: Adjust the mask to fit snugly but comfortably over your face. If the mask feels loose, consider adding more fabric ties or adjusting the slits.
Maintenance: Wash the mask regularly to maintain hygiene. The no-sew design allows for easy washing and drying.
By following these steps, you can create a functional and comfortable face mask with materials you have on hand. This no-sew method is a practical solution for those looking to make masks quickly and efficiently. Stay safe and happy crafting!
