EU WANTS TO CLOSE MEDIA COMPANIES RT AND SPUTNIK
Through the mouth of the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, the European Union decided yesterday to close a number of media companies in the future. Specifically, it concerns Russia Today and Sputnik and their subsidiaries. According to von der Leyen, these media outlets "spread lies to justify Putin's war. She is going to work with her staff to banish their "toxic and harmful disinformation" in EU countries. It is part of a series of measures issued by the EU following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
It is not by chance that media organizations Russia Today and Sputnik are targeted, both were founded in Russia and are largely paid for by the Russian government. A similar media company is the BBC, which is also viewed around the world and is kept on the air by the United Kingdom government.
Such a ban on RT and Sputnik seems to contradict the views of the European Union itself. Indeed, one of the EU's policy choices is: 'The European Union upholds press freedom and pluralism as pillars of modern democracy and drivers of free and open debate.' It is even included in Article 11 of the "Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union.
